BHAT representatives briefed the Community Council on the Forth Ports proposal to develop the Western Peninsula (also known as Shanks Pier or the Dead Boats area) as a community asset. The peninsula, outlined in green in the photo below, sits between the East and West Docks and represents 10% of the area in the Eastern Dock fenced off in February 2023.
The plan envisages having Forth Ports as the lead agency to make the area safe and then develop it with inputs from the community – initially the Burntisland Community Development Trust. BHAT welcomed this initiative but will stand back from developing or managing, preferring to dedicate its efforts to the restoration of access in the remaining 90% of the East Dock.
